The biodynamic farming method takes a holistic, ecological approach to agriculture by focusing on improving soil fertility to produce healthier plants and, in turn, healthier individuals. Like organic farming, it uses natural composts as opposed to artificial chemicals, however the biodynamic method strives to create a balanced ecosystem within the soil itself, which enhances the nutrition, quality, and flavour of the food being grown. A number of biodynamic practices have been implemented at the foundation. For example, fermented manure preparations and composts are buried underground and act as natural soil enhancers, promoting root activity and revitalizing the soil.

KRMEF also embodies the biodynamic ideology, which takes into account the teachings of founder Dr. Rudolph Steiner. A respected philosopher and social activist, Dr. Steiner sought to harmonize the relationship between soil, plants, and animals to create a positive dynamic energy. The biodynamic farms promote ecological and social sustainability and in turn emphasis is placed on the well-being of the community. Therefore, biodynamics is not only a holistic agricultural system, but it also has great social impact.

It is KRMEF’s mission to bring these environmentally sustainable, effective farming methods to the local community and eventually throughout Nepal. Villagers from remote areas can attend seminars at the foundation to learn about biodynamic farming practices, which they can then bring back to their own communities. In addition, Krishna travels throughout Nepal to spread the practice by offering free seminars, sometimes accompanied by Hans Mulder, an internationally renowned expert on biodynamic farming. We have seen the positive impact of the biodynamic farming method in other regions, so we are very happy to see this organic change in other communities and hope for their continued growth.

In May 20126, volunteers from Keene State College and Johnson and Wales University (USA) came for a few weeks at the end of May. They helped to build our newest tomato farm structure. The greenhouse protects and has already begun producing amazing tomato fruits. Our greenhouse helps protect the tomato plants from browning, bugs, and other external factors. These tomatoes will be used in the café in addition to being sold to local markets.
